Ramen are Japanese noodles of Chinese origin. They are very popular snacks in the Pacific Rim and in America. They are stereotypically associated with American college students because they (or at least their instant form, such as manufactured by Nissin) are typically very inexpensive.

Ingredients[edit]

A typical bowl of ramen consists of wheat noodles in a soy sauce broth. Usually, it is accompanied by a raw egg, naruto (a spiral fish paste), katsuo (bonito) flakes, and tonkatsu (a piece of barbecued pork). There are many different variations of the dish.

Instant ramen bowls and cups, the most well-known type in America, come in many different flavors. Chicken broth and beef broth are very popular. In South Korea, one of the most popular varieties of ramen, Shin Ramyun, is a spicy beef-flavored ramen that has gained popularity not only in its native country, but also in Japan and Korea.
