Joseph Trumpeldor (December 1, 1880 – March 1, 1920) was a famous Zionist born in Pyatigorsk, Russia, who brought many Jews into Palestine, which was under Ottoman rule. He served in the Russian army in 1902 in the Russo-Japanese War and in 1906 became the first Jew to receive an officer's commission in the Russian army. He died in Tel Hai in a battle against Arabs. His last words were, "Never mind, it is good to die for our country."
