Svalbard or Spitsbergen is an archipelago and territory of the Kingdom of Norway in the Barents Sea. Its capital, Longyearbyen, is the world's northernmost city. The population of Svalbard includes a significant Russian community which has for decades worked coal mines in the islands by agreement between the former Soviet Union and Norway.[1] Other economic activities include 'ice tourism'.[2] Whaling was formerly an important economic activity.[3] It is the location of the northern-most church in the world.[4]
