American History lecture nine homework

1: i think antitrust laws are something that just makes the problem worse because there may be reasons for monopolies. a monopoly could have developed simply because a company had the best good for the cheapest price and any company that attains a monopoly should not be penalized for their hard work.

Great points, but how about discussing the problem of when monopolies are obtained through anticompetitive business practices that interfere with free enterprise? An example is Microsoft forcing people to use its browser as part of Windows, in order to drive a competitor browser out of business.

2: imperialism of any kind can be good as long as it used in moderation. Imperialism can help form and guide new countries as well as helping them to develop faster, but it can also lead to enmity and revolt

Right. Good answer.

3: the progressive movement had many good ideas about improving our government but it also had some that I do not agree with, however, it will never completely please everyone. I think on a whole it was a pretty beneficial movement.

OK, but "better government" is an oxymoron to conservatives.

5: The “cross of gold” speech was given by William Jennings Bryan in 1896 at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on July 8. This speech was arguing for the use of silver as a standard for currency. This speech was perhaps misguided but there is no doubt it had “meaning”.

So ... what's the meaning? Good answer otherwise, but incomplete. (Minus 1).

6: an example of yellow journalism today would be the huge exaggeration of the japan nuclear crisis.

Right. Superb.

7: the conservative democrat was Grover Cleveland. Although he was a democrat his views, such as his support of free enterprise and lack thereof for unions, and his decisions, such as his decision not to bail out the bank in the financial Panic of 189, were very conservative.

Excellent. But 189?????.

Honors

1: in light of the fact that the invasion of the Philippines was unnecessary I think it was a complete waste of lives and never should have happened.

OK.

2: Debate: Should government break up monopolies? I’m of the opinion that any interference by the government on free enterprise is a bad thing. The breaking up of monopolies is not something that the government should be doing.

Excellent.

5: Rockefeller was an example of how almost anyone can prosper if they truly set their mind to it and work hard to accomplish their goals. I do not necessarily agree with his method for gaining his monopoly but I do not have a problem with him working to acquire it.

Terrific.
