MichelleF 1. a)"Virtual representation" did not satisfy the colonists. They considered it to be taxation without representation. b)The colonists were accustomed to being left to make their own decisions most of the time and these taxes were somewhat unexpected and the colonists saw them as unfair. c)The taxes came at a time of economic weakness.

Superb.

2. John Mayhew came up with the phrase. James Otis helped make it popular. Users of the phrase maintained that they had no representation in Parliment.

Correct. "Parliament", not "Parliment".

3. Some colonists dressed as indians and dumped all the tea on the ships into the ocean.Specifically, it was defiannce of the tea tax,but it also protested the other various taxing acts.

Good, but be a little more specific. For example, the tea was dumped into Boston Harbor. (Minus 1).

4. I think the judicial system was partially responsible. Allowing spectral "evidence" was absurd and superstitious and the defendants should have been presumed innocent until proven guilty. I think that the doctor was to blame for crediting the idea that it was supernatural.

Excellent.

5. True. Tolerant only of puritans, Massacusetts had more conflict Pennsylvania, a colony with more religious freedom.

Good.

6. Should England have been able to impose direct taxes on the colonies? Firstly, the colonies had no way of being represented in parliment. In Essence, decisions that should have been the colonists were being made by people who had no right to be making them. Secondly, the taxes were not going to be used for the colonies benefit, but solely to put money in the king's pocket. It should have been used for governing and protecting the colonies. Lastly, some of the colonies did not belong tothe king so he sho;uld not have been able to tax them directly. Indirectly would have been different.

Good analysis.

7. A snake cannot survive without all of its body; if the colonies did not stick together and support each other they would all fail. I find it interesting that New England is the head of the snake.I guess they thought of themselves as the head of the colonies.

Superb insight at the end. Another student said it was drawn that way because, when turned on its side, it resembles a map of the colonies.

H1. I find it interesting that settlement extended beyond the Proclamation Line. I also thought it interesting that the colonies were not the sizes they are now (as states). Massachusetts is smaller now, and georgia is larger, etc.

Excellent.

H2. Britain taxed the colonies through their purchases, similar to sales tax. I don't think that Britain should have been taxing the colonies, but I also don't like the whole colonial system. i think it was great for them to establish it and help the people make it more civilized , but after that, hands off. I think they have no claim on it after that.

You argued your view well here.

H4.Colonial America: had freedom of press( granted by a jury). England: had no freedom of press ( and still isnot as free as America's press). America: had few class distinctions. England: had many large distinctions and gaps between social classes. America: still building economy and in post-war depression. England: strong, established economy that could recover from wars, and had done so often.

Superb.
