Traditionally, the term scanner referred to a radio receiver that moves across a wide range of radio frequencies and allows audiences to listen to any of the frequencies.

Later the term scanner became known as a device that automatically reads a document or barcode into an electronic system for transmission or identification.

Today, the term refers to a device that scans a text and converts it to a digital image.
