Colorado Charter Schools

Colorado charter schools face hostility by the Denver school board, which voted in January 2023 to close a longstanding charter school in southwest Denver, despite its enrollment of about 209.

Overall, there are 265 charter schools in Colorado having an enrollment of more than 134,000 students in 2021-2022, which is more than double the charter school population in the larger liberal state of Illinois.

Colorado charter school students must take state examinations, and represent 15% of the public school enrollment there.
