American History Homework Four 10/05/08 Olivia F.

1. The “Revolution of 1800” was the first peaceful change of power in the modern history of an election. The Democratic- Republican Party replaced the Federalist Party as the dominant group.

Excellent.

2. If I were the president, I would have approved of the Louisiana Purchase for two reasons: 1) I would want to have obtained all of the land from the Atlantic to the Pacific Oceans, and 2) Before the West was settled, I would have been able to sell it, if there were conflicts.

Superb points!

3. One of the causes of the War of 1812 was England harassing American sailors and forcing them to sail English ships.

Terrific, will use this in the model answers.

4. Two things that I liked most about the Monroe Administration were that Monroe was a conservative, and I really like the Monroe Doctrine because Monroe was not afraid to tell England to stay out of our hemisphere.

Excellent.

5. The “Jacksonian Democracy” means Jackson’s triumph of his democracy.

Good, but could provide a bit more detail about "his democracy." (Minus 1).

6. The Marshall Court is known for 1) Increasing the powers of the national government, 2) diminishing the powers of the states, and 3) perpetuating the Federalist principle of centralization.

Fantastic answer.

7. In the cartoon, John Bull represents America, Columbia represents Great Britain, and the Russian bear represents Russia. The approximate date for the cartoon is c. 1813 and the cartoonist was probably in favor of resolving the argument between America and Britain.

Good, except you have John Bull and Columbia reversed in who they represent. (Minus 1).

H1. Jefferson seems to receive better treatment by historians than he deserves, perhaps because he was a Founding Father and many people respected him as being an effective statesman.

OK.

H3. Could Meriwether Lewis have been murdered, or did he commit suicide? It is still unknown whether or not Lewis took his own life or was murdered. Historians do know that he had already attempted to take his life twice before he actually died.

I didn't know that fact! Good analysis.

H4. The South greatly disliked the tariffs because they did not help to sell more cotton, and the South did not want to jeopardize trading with foreign countries. The North, however, did not oppose the tariffs since a majority of the domestic industries and factories were located there, which caused no hardship to the merchants.

Superb!
Terrific answers. Score: 98/100.--Aschlafly 15:15, 11 October 2008 (EDT)
