The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) is the municipal police force on the Ottawa side of the National Capital Region in Ontario, Canada.
The OPS had its origins in the pre-Confederation formation of the Bytown Association in 1847, with Roderick Ross becoming the first chief constable for the newly-formed Ottawa Police Department (the precursor to the OPS) in 1855. Over time, the OPD amalgamated the police forces of neighboring municipalities, starting with the Vanier Police in 1984. The OPS took its current name in 2001 with the amalgamation of several neigboring communities into Ottawa.
The OPS currently has 1,387 sworn members and 600 unsworn members in its ranks. It is currently headed by interim Chief Steve Bell, who took over following the resignation of former Chief Peter Sloly (see Controversy section below).
Controversy[edit]
- OPS Chief Peter Sloly, who had sided with Canadian Liberal dictator Justin Trudeau and similarly made false accusations against the anti-CCP flu mandate Freedom Convoy trucker protest (including accusing them, without proof, of "harmful activities" and of spreading "hatred" and "violence"), announced his resignation from his post after he was criticized for his baseless accusations.[1] His replacement, Steve Bell, announced that it was now "illegal" to peacefully protest against the government.[2]
- The OPS, speaking at Trudeau's behest, publicly claimed that anyone still protesting in Ottawa is now "breaking the law" (even though there is no law, either federally, provincially or locally, against peaceful protesting);[3] in response, members of the main protest voted to dismiss the invocation of the Emergencies Act (which Trudeau invoked on February 14, 2022 in disproportionate response to the peaceful Freedom Convoy protests[4]) as nothing more than a scare tactic utilized by Trudeau for intimidation purposes.[5]
- Trudeau began employing the OPS as his personal Gestapo to begin illegal arrests and seizures of the truckers' private property in violation of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. He started by ordering the arrests of Freedom Convoy organizers Chris Barber and Tamara Lich on false charges of "counseling to commit mischief" (a charge that would actually apply to the organizers of the violent riots perpetrated by Antifa, Black Lives Matter and other far-Left hate groups favored by Trudeau[6] and other corrupt leftist politicians), with Barber also being falsely charged with "counseling to disobey a court order" and "counseling to obstruct police".[7]
- The OPS, to cover up their crimes (including vandalism, assaults and the use of disproportionate force against the peaceful protesters),[8] also began making illegal threats of arrest (in violation of freedom of speech and freedom of the press) against members of the media who cover the Freedom Convoy,[9] while protesters prevented the OPS from illegally arresting another trucker;[10] in response to the OPS' threat against journalists, several constitutional rights groups condemned the force.[11]
- Hundreds more OPS officers, along with officers brought in from outside of Ottawa and from out of province, began flooding into Ottawa under orders from Trudeau to deal Gestapo-style with the Freedom Convoy and began violently clashing with protesters,[12], with there even being reports of police snipers on the rooftops of buildings near the site of the main protest.[13]
- True North journalist Andrew Lawton was pepper sprayed by OPS jackboots as part of their Trudeau-ordered Gestapo-style illegal crackdown against the Freedom Convoy; in response, Candice Malcolm, another journalist for True North, has hired a lawyer to take the OPS to court for assault and targeting of a journalist.[14]
- Several OPS jackboots gang-attacked and viciously assaulted one protester and falsely accused other protesters of "assaulting" officers and tying to "grab their guns", while Trudeau ignored the carnage he had unleashed as he tweeted about the 2022 Winter Olympics in Peking,[15] for which he was almost universally roasted on Twitter.
- Acting in collusion with the OPS, mounted RCMP officers in Ottawa later escalated the violence when they charged their horses into a group of protesters and brutally trampled several of them, including an elderly woman with a walker, and even callously laughing about their vicious and illegal actions, while Ottawa Public Health, in covering for the criminal actions of the jackboots, told Twitter users to "turn off Twitter" to keep said actions from being seen.[16] While the trampling victim, an elderly First Nations woman who took part in the Freedom Convoy protest, was originally reported to have been killed, independent journalist Keean Bexte later reported that she was alive and hospitalized with a dislocated shoulder.[17]
- Rebel News reporter Alexa Lavoie was viciously assaulted and injured by OPS jackboots, one of whom lunged at her and struck her in the head three times without provocation, followed by a second jackboot shooting a tear gas canister at her leg at point-blank range, all of which was caught live on camera as she was covering the OPS' continuing Trudeau-ordered Gestapo tactics against Freedom Convoy protesters.[18] Several of the protesters rescued Lavoie from being further attacked by the uniformed thugs. Rebel News host Ezra Levant, who speculated that Trudeau has officially ordered his jackboots to attack journalists who film their criminal activity and pointed out that some of them intentionally attacked Lavoie after they saw her filming them assaulting protesters, announced that the news outlet will sue the OPS for its criminal assault against Lavoie.
- When Rebel News reporter David Menzies later confronted Steve Bell during a press conference about his jackboots' assault of Lavoie, Bell engaged in plausible deniability by claiming not to know about the incident, despite it having been seen more than 100,000 times on Twitter.[19]
- Steve Bell praised the actions of the jackboots under his command, claiming that their acts of violent and lawless thuggery have been "lawful and safe" despite being the exact opposite.[20]
- The OPS has come under fire on its Twitter page for its continued false claims, lies and gaslighting in its posts regarding its own actions and those of the Freedom Convoy protesters, all of which have been debunked and discredited by video reports from Rebel News, True North and various independent journalists that expose the lies of the OPS[21] (including the false claim by the OPS that reports of one of the protesters being trampled and injured by a police horse during the jackboots' crackdown was "misinformation", despite video evidence and eyewitness reports exposing the OPS claim as a lie[22]). While a minority of liberal Twitter posters have actually cheered on and supported the actions of the OPS jackboots while immaturely mocking and ridiculing the protesters and their supporters, the overwhelming majority of posters have been harshly critical of the OPS and its lawless actions. When Ottawa citizens began flooding OPS phone lines to call them out in outrage over the OPS' tyrannical actions against the protesters, the OPS responded with threats of criminal charges against the callers - basically implying the OPS' implied entitlement to do as they think they please.[23]
- OPS jackboots began firing rubber bullets and tear gas at hundreds of peaceful protesters in downtown Ottawa as the protesters defiantly held their ground.[24] Not surprisingly, the complicit liberal media covered for the criminal OPS by ignoring their actions.
- Several OPS jackboots were caught on camera dragging a protester between two trucks and viciously kneeing and injuring him while their comrades watched and cheered the jackboots on.[25]
- OPS jackboots illegally seized the vehicles of protesters who had been arrested during the crackdowns on the protests; Ottawa mayor/Trudeau puppet Jim Watson then declared that the vehicles stolen by the OPS would be auctioned off to cover the costs of the jackboots' actions, which state propaganda outlet the CBC justified.[26]
- The OPS and other officers assisting them displayed their "show me your papers" mentality (akin to Hitler's Gestapo) when an Ontario Provincial Police jackboot demanded the credentials of Alexa Lavoie when she went to cover the OPS crackdown on the Freedom Convoy protesters, but when Lavoie produced them, he and a second jackboot rejected them, denying reality by claiming, despite proof being produced, that Lavoie "had no credentials" and claiming, without proof, that her credentials were just "...a laminated piece of paper you could have made at home;" the OPP jackboot in Lavoie's video for Rebel News was identified as Brad Milburn.[27] Rebel News reported that while independent news outlets were denied access to report inside the police perimeter (to prevent the independent journalists from catching the jackboots in the act of committing more atrocities against the protesters), liberal media outlets such as the CBC (who have willingly turned a blind eye to said atrocities from the beginning and have "reported" only the official Trudeau spin) were allowed through without question.
- OPS goons have begun harassing and illegally threatening arrest against Ottawa residents and out-of-town visitors for simply walking on city streets; one such hostile thug lunged at a woman out to get a coffee and assaulted her by violently ripping a cell phone camera out of her hands, then behaved in Gestapo-like fashion as he screamed at her for filming the jackboots and claimed to her that she was "in a red zone", despite there being nothing indicating that the area the woman with the camera was in was what the goon who lunged at her claimed.[28]
- A braggadocious Steve Bell claimed that the Freedom Convoy was "finished" while he announced that strict security measures and checkpoints that had been set up in downtown Ottawa at Trudeau's behest would remain in place under a false claim of bolstering "community healing" to justify Trudeau's continued abuse of power and the setup of a police state presence in the downtown core.[29]
- Bell later openly threatened participants of the Freedom Convoy that even if they left to return to their homes, the OPS would hunt them down and continue their illegal persecution and harassment against the protesters.[30]
- The threats made by the OPS against the protesters, many of which were made on Twitter, ended up drawing a massive wave of negative blowback from foreign politicians (including United States Republican Senator Ted Cruz and former White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany), journalists (including conservative commentator Dave Rubin, who outright referred to the OPS as Nazis) and other public figures (including ex-Navy SEAL Carl Higbie, who was harshly critical of the OPS for its aggressive actions and for lying about what they did afterward, and conservative podcaster Mike Cernovich, who also directly called the OPS liars) and groups (including conservative NPO Turning Point USA, which called out the OPS for its unprovoked criminal assaults on journalists like Alexa Lavoie and Andrew Lawton), while a Twitter account parodying the OPS, calling itself the "Ottawa Gestapo", was created to mock the OPS official tweets.[31]
