Quantum Hall Effect

The quantum Hall effect occurs when a low-temperature electron gas in a two-dimensional plane is subjected to a strong perpendicular magnetic field. The resulting in-plane transverse conductance of the electrons is such that "the electrical conductance is quantized and can change only in discrete steps."[1]
