Geodesic Dome

A geodesic dome is a structure based on a network of triangles that form a geodesic. Depending on the sizes of the dome and the triangles, a geodesic dome's shape is approximately spherical. The edges of the triangles form geodesic lines which are circular sections on the surface of the sphere.

Their modern use is generally credited to Buckminster Fuller who has a U.S. patent on the design. He was also the architect for the Biosphère in Montreal.

These domes are among the largest and most structurally sound man-made objects. They are also extremely lightweight and cheap to produce. Geodesic domes have numerous modern applications in industrial, the military, and housing. Some famous examples of geodesic domes include the Biosphere, the Climatron Dome, which houses a botanical garden in Missouri, and Spaceship Earth, a geodesic sphere located at Walt Disney World in Florida.
