Northern Ireland Assembly

The Northern Ireland Assembly is the devolved legislative body in Northern Ireland. It was established as a result of the Belfast Agreement of 10 April 1998.

The Northern Ireland Assembly consists of 108 elected Members - six from each of the 18 Westminster constituencies. They are elected using the single transferable vote form of proportional representation. Those elected are known as Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs).

The speaker

The Office of the Presiding Officer of the Assembly is known as ‘the Speaker’. In other words, 'the Speaker' presides over the proceedings of the Assembly. The Speaker often acts as a host when Northern Ireland receives official visits. The speaker and the three Deputy Speakers are elected by the Assembly.
