American History Homework Three 9.24.08

1. Two weaknesses in the Articles of Confederation were 1) the required approval of 9 out of the 13 states to pass laws and 2) the Congress’s lack of power to impose taxes on the people.

Superb: you picked the two biggest problems and expressed them concisely.

2. The first three Articles of Confederation were: Art. I- Congress’s power is established, Art. II- the President’s power is established and Art. III- the Supreme Court’s power is established.

Correct.

3. One of the reasons why I like George Washington is because he was not afraid to get his hands dirty. During the Whiskey Rebellion, when the Pennsylvania governor refused to stop the violent farmers, George acted. He rounded up an army and suppressed the rebellion; he even pardoned the rebel farmers when it was all finished.

Excellent, will use as a model answer!

4. The most important invention of the 1790s was the cotton gin. Invented by Eli Whitney, it separated the cotton from its thorny branch and seeds. It greatly increased the cotton production of the South, causing the entire world to rely on the South for cotton.

Correct.

5. This cartoon was printed in the Massachusetts Centinel on January 30, 1788. It depicts the ratification of the Constitution; Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, and Connecticut are already in position because they have already ratified the Constitution. The pair of hands, probably God’s, are lifting Massachusetts into position next to Connecticut. The cartoonist was probably in favor of the Constitution.

Excellent.

6. Two significant achievements of the Northwest Ordinance were establishing new states orderly and peacefully, and putting foreign countries on notice that the United States owned the land.

Good, could use a bit more detail.

7. The most significant event about John Adams’ presidency was the Alien and Sedition Acts.

Good, but explain why that was significant. (Minus 1).

H3. I believe that debtor’s prison was a good idea that punished those who did not pay their debts; however, I also believe that the prisoners should be given many chances to pay off their debt.

Well done.

H4. The Shays’ Rebellion was not handled well; the farmers took over the town courthouse and it took six months to finally stop the uprising. The Whiskey Rebellion, on the other hand, was dealt with very quickly. George Washington raised an army, and personally rode out and stopped the revolt. Due to this fact and many others, I believe that a president is necessary.

Excellent, will use as a model answer.

H5. Jefferson and Madison were enraged by the Alien and Sedition Acts, and responded to them by writing strong state declarations to nullify the Acts. I very much agree with their approach; they did not gather an up army and attack the Federalist Party, rather they wrote a strongly worded declaration.

Excellent.
Terrific answers, including two model answers! Grade: 99/100.--Aschlafly 08:36, 4 October 2008 (EDT)
