American History Homework

Assignment 7

1. The gilded age was a time in the United State’s history when it looked good to the outside world, but on the inside it was full of corruption.

Good, but could say a bit more: its time period, or the source of its name. (Minus 2).

2. I like Thomas Edison because he invented so many useful items that we use today. By homeschooling, he probably learned how to discipline himself better, and he could focus his studies where he wanted to go.

Excellent.

3. The frontier could have affected the views in American’s by saying to them that America was trying to gain more power for itself.

Good.

4. The United States has the freedom to do anything pretty much. People are able to read whatever they want, or study whatever they want. That is why the United States has made the position of leader of inventions.

Excellent.

5. Political cartoons can be very influential. One example is the election that took place when James Buchanan won.

Good, but explain a bit more about your example. (Minus 1).

6. I think the most influential person between 1877 and 1896 was Ulysses S.

Good, but why? (Minus 1).

7. The cartoon is saying that America was falling into gold quick sand instead of heading for prosperity. The cartoonist shows prosperity as a setting sun. The cartoonist does not think America will make it out of the quick sand and on to prosperity.

Good.

8. H2. The Blaine Amendments: I believe that the Blaine Amendments were a bad thing. Schools should have the right to except money from whomever they want to. By adding these amendments, Blaine was just giving the federal government more power.

Excellent point about giving the government more power (and not just to the "federal" government). Will use as a model. (note: "accept", not "except").

9. H3. Do you think government should be able to set the rates charged by railroads and other “public facilities”?

       a.	I do not think the government should be able to set the rates charged by railroads and other “public facilities”. Unless the government owns the railroads or facilities, they should not be able to determine the rates. America is supposed to be a place for free business, by making these regulations, the government is not upholding America’s reputation.
Excellent, will use as a model.

10. H4. I do not oppose or support unions. Organizing a union is just another form of business. Rockefeller used unions during the 1800’s. That union decided to go on strike because they thought they should receive more pay. The union allowed the thought “the union runs the business” to go to their head. They should have been thinking the business runs the union.

Good, and and interesting point about Rockefeller.
Some very insightful answers, but some gaps also. Overall, well done! Score: 66/70.--Aschlafly 18:37, 1 November 2008 (EDT)
