Angels (Tract)

From Conservapedia

Not to be confused with Four Angels?, another Jack Chick tract.

Angels? is a religious tract written by Jack Chick. It was originally printed in 1986, and currently remains an out of print title (however, all out-of-print titles can be ordered from Chick Publications for a minimum quantity of 10,000 tracts). It is listed on their website under the subject "Rock Music" and also tagged as "Older Children and Adults".

The tract depicts a struggling Christian rock band, the Green Angels[1], who had just had a church concert interrupted by the church's preacher (who opposed rock music in any form, and to make matters worse were shorted $300 of promised pay). While getting burgers, they are approached by "Mr. Siffer", who offers them $500 each ($2,000 total) for a private concert and agrees to make them successful; the band admits that they aren't "solid" Christians (i.e. they aren't completely "sold out" for Christ). At his place, Siffer agrees to become their agent, but the members must sign the contract -- in blood, after which he mentions his name is "Lewis Siffer" but they could call him "Lew" (as in "Lew Siffer", a play on Lucifer). He then explains to them how he actually controls all rock music ("Christian" and secular) and that it is all controlled by the "one world Church".[2]

Within two months, Siffer makes good on his promise: the Green Angels become megastars. Two years later, Bobby announces that (despite Siffer's protests) he will marry his homosexual lover; Siffer responds by giving Bobby AIDS three months later (Dan, who was Bobby's best friend, now could care less, saying that he can be easily replaced, and later delves into vampirism). Jim dies of a drug overdose during a concert, leaving Tom the only remaining member. One week after the fatal concert, Tom notices a tract in his pocket, placed there by a female fan. Tom reads the tract[3], repents of his sins and orders Siffer out of his life.

The very last frame shows Tom speaking at a church, now opposing the use of Christian rock, with the female fan who gave him the tract in attendance.

References[edit]

  1. The members of the band are Bobby, Dan, Jim, and Tom. The tract does not specify each member's role in the band.
  2. Chick was an opponent of both rock music in all forms, and the Roman Catholic Church; thus, the presentation draws heavily on Chick's conspiratorial views on both subjects.
  3. The tract is The Contract!, a Chick retelling of the American short story The Devil and Daniel Webster.
