The University of Mary Washington is a Virginia public university founded in 1908 and named for Mary Washington, the mother of George Washington.[2] The school was ranked 11th among southern undergraduate programs in the “Universities - Master’s” category in U.S. News & World Report's 2010 edition of America’s Best Colleges.[2]
It was founded in 1908 as a normal school to train teachers. It was the women's college of the University of Virginia before the university became coeducational. In 1970, both schools became coeducational, and in 1972 it became a separate institution with a separate Board of Visitors.[3]
