Yorkshire Dales

The Yorkshire Dales are a region of the central Pennines in Yorkshire, northern England, and the site of the Yorkshire Dales National Park (which also extends into Cumbria).^[1]

The dales are the local valleys, of which the main ones are Wensleydale (home of the cheese), Swaledale (origin of one of the local sheep breeds), Ribblesdale, Wharfedale, Nidderdale, Dentdale, Malhamdale and Arkengarthdale.

Important population centres of the area are Settle, Hawes, Ingleton, Kirkby Lonsdale and Sedburgh. The Settle-Carlisle railway runs through Ribblesdale and Dentdale.

It is a popular destination for walkers (on the Pennine Way or the local Three Peaks route), cavers, climbers (especially for the exposed scarps of Malham Cove and Goredale Scar) and many other visitors.
