Olympian Village is a city in southern Jefferson County, Missouri. It had a population of 774 at the 2010 census.
Olympian Village is among the younger communities in Jefferson County, having only come into existence in the 1960s following the construction of a subdivision of single-family homes east of De Soto, Missouri. To attract interest, the developers named most of its streets after notable figures and locations in ancient Greece: Hellespont Drive, Hercules Place, Parthenon Drive, etc.[1]
The community was incorporated in 1965, but due to its being somewhat isolated in a rural part of the county and being organized as a strictly residential area, its growth stagnated from the 1980s onward. More recently, the town has had difficulties maintaining local services; its full-time police department had to be disbanded in 2009 due to a lack of funding.
Olympian Village lies on the east side of U.S. Route 67 in southern Jefferson County, at the eastern terminus of Missouri State Highway 110. It is about five miles east of De Soto, and six miles southwest of Festus. Its exact coordinates are 38°08’04”N 90°27’34”W.
The city lies in rolling, mostly wooded countryside. There is a small artificial reservoir nearby, Wildwood Lake, and a local stream known as Plattin Creek a short distance to the east. Olympian Village has a total land area of 0.57 square miles, and an average elevation of 600 feet.[2]
At the 2010 census, Olympian Village had a total of 774 inhabitants, grouped into 246 households, with a population density of 1,357.9 people per square mile. This figure represented a significant increase from the 2000 census, when Olympian Village had a population of 669. 97.29% of the inhabitants were White, 0.39% were African-American, 0.26% were Native American, 0.52% were Asian, 0.39% were from some other race, and 1.16% were from two or more races. Hispanics of any race were 1.55% of the population.
The median age in Olympian Village was 32.2 years, with 30.9% of inhabitants under the age of 18, 9.3% between 18 and 24 years old, 28.6% between 25 and 44, 25.3% between 45 and 64, and 5.8% 65 years old or older. The sex ratio was 47.8% male, 52.2% female.[3]
According to the 2018 American Community Survey, Olympian Village had a median household income of $46,607, and a median family income of $46,429. The unemployment rate was 9.9%. The per capita income was $20,628. About 18.3% of the population lived below the poverty line, including 20.9% of people under the age of 18 and 14.3% of people 65 years old or older.[4]
Olympian Village is served by the De Soto School District 73. Most of the district's facilities are located in its home city of De Soto.[5]
