Lille is a city of more than 225,000 inhabitants situated on the Deule River in Northern France, in the Nord Pas-de-Calais region, on the frontier with Belgium. The Lille Metropole area, with a population of over 1 million inhabitants, is the fourth largest metropolitan area in France. The city's Flemish name is Rijsel; both the French and the Flemish name mean roughly 'the Island'. Historically the city belonged to the county of Flanders.[1]
