The University of Massachusetts (or UMass) is a Massachusetts public university established in 1863.[2] The system is spread out among 5 campuses: Boston, Dartmouth, Lowell, Worcester and, the flagship campus, Amherst.[3] The flagship campus ranked #96 in U.S. News & World Reports 2008 "National Universities: Top Schools" list.[4]

History[edit]

The school was established as the Massachusetts Agricultural College. It became known as the Massachusetts State College in 1932 and in 1947 became the University of Massachusetts.[2] The Worcester and Boston campuses were founded in 1962 and 1964. The Lowell and Dartmouth campuses, which were previously two different schools (the University of Lowell and Southeastern Massachusetts University), were consolidated into the University under Chapter 142 of the acts of 1991.[2]
