1. What was the "Great War," and why was it called that? Who was on each side? The Great War is often known as “World War One”. It was the first global war in history and was the first to use aircraft. There were two sides fighting against each other, the side of the Central Powers were Austria-Hungary, Germany, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire. The other side was the Allies of Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Japan and later on the United States.

2. Who won World War I? Explain the outcome: The Allies (Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Japan, and United States) won World War I.

The outcome of World War I was not the best. Millions of people died during it and many soldiers lost their lives due to the “Spanish flu”. This war ended up not doing much good and helped initiate a war 20 years later.

3. Pick your favorite battle of the War and describe it: The Third Battle of Ypres, also known as the Battle of Passchendaele took place in 1917. The British hid 19 huge land mines underneath the German lines southeast of Ypres, Belgium for 18 months, hoping to damage the German culture severely. At first the strategy had been a success, causing the Germans great confusion and disorganization, but the British did not pursue the Germans as quickly as they should have and rain drenched the area. The British force was then stuck in a mountain of mud, and this Allied plan was a failure.

4. When, where, why, and by whom did the Communist Revolution occur? Communism took place in Russia around the time of World War One, in 1917. The revolution was inspired by the ideas of Marxism aiming to replace capitalism with communism. Vladimir Lenin also took part in the revolution he brought about Leninism which argues that a communist revolution must be led by a vanguard of professional revolutionaries, which is men and women who are fully dedicated to the communist cause and who can then form the nucleus of the revolutionary movement.

5. Pick an aspect of "Science and Art in the Early 20th Century" and describe it, along with your view: In the early 20th century the “Big Bang Theory” was proposed by a Belgian Catholic priest, Georges-Henri Lemaître. He believed that the universe began with a massive explosion. Many made fun of the theory due to its name, but later on in 1929, Edward Hubble, a devout Christian found evidence supporting this theory. I think the “Big Bang” is ridiculous. I believe the universe was created by God and God only.

6. Describe a European colony in the 20th century, and what happened to it: During World War I, India was looking for independence but the British did not grant India its independence directly after the war, as many Indians had hoped for and the British had no intentions of ever doing so. It wasn’t until Mohandas K. Ghandi came along that India was able to receive its independence.

7. Current events question: Do you think our economic problems today are -- or are not -- similar to the Great Depression? Explain by including some history about the Great Depression. The Great Depression took place during the mid 1900’s. It was an awful time and helps remind people today of how far the world’s economy can fall. The Great Depression dealt with the stock markets crashing, and the result of many people losing their jobs. Today’s society is not as bad as the Great Depression was. I believe that we are on our way to something much similar to the Depression, but that we are not there yet.
