Herb Alpert

Herbert "Herb" Alpert was born in Los Angeles on March 31, 1935. Introduced to the trumpet at just eight years of age, he would gain fame as the leader of the Tijuana Brass and with his partner, Jerry Moss, would be the “A” in the very successful A&M Records.

In 1963 “The Lonely Bull” landed in the top ten of the Hit Parade. A year later "A Taste of Honey” did the same followed by “Zorba the Greek.” As a vocalist, Herb Alpert’s “Thus Guy’s In Love With You” reached #1 in 1968, as did another instrumental, “Rise” in 1979. He would be the only recording artist in history to top the charts with both an instrumental and a vocal.

Alpert had dozens of hit singles that fueled the sale of more than 75 million albums worldwide. Among the most famous are:

• The Mexican Shuffle
• What Now My Love
• Spanish Flea
• The Word Song
• Flamingo
• Mame

In 1966 the Tijuana Brass had five albums on the best seller charts,four of them in the top ten simultaneously.

Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss each have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and received a Grammy Award in 1997 for their lifetime achievements in the recording industry.

In 2006, both Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss were also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
