French rabbi; born at Ensisheim, Alsace, Oct. 21, 1841; educated at the bet ha-midrash of Colmar and the Séminaire Israélite de France in Paris (rabbi, 1861). In 1865 he was appointed rabbi at Versailles, and in 1876 he was called to Paris as assistant to the chief rabbi of that city. Since 1882 he has officiated as rabbi of the Portuguese synagogue in Rue Buffault, Paris. He is the author of "La Femme Juive Selon la Bible et le Talmud" (Paris; 2d ed. 1881) and "Judah Maccabée Suivi de Rabbi Akiba" ( ib. 1888).
