The Federated States of Micronesia is an independent nation in free association with the United States. It is located in the western Pacific Ocean and comprises over 600 islands divided into four island groups—the states of Chuuk, Kosrae, Pohnpei and Yap. The nation has an area of 702 sq mi and is home to approximately 106,500 people (July 2011 estimate).
