SuperDroid Robots, Inc. is an American robotics company that specializes in custom robotic solutions and is based in Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina, USA. The company was founded in 2000 and produces a range of robotic platforms, systems, and components.
SuperDroid Robots was founded in 2000 by Battlebots competitor Charlie Payne and his wife Susan Payne. The company operated out of the workshop where their Battlebot Atomic Wedgie was built...[1] SuperDroid Robots initially produced a series of DIY educational robots called Trekker. Shortly after it’s founding SuperDroid Robots expanded into custom robotics and robotic platforms. Notable clients include Disney, Boeing, NASA[2], National Geographic[3], and Northrop Grumman.[4]
In 2008 SuperDroid Robots created a department specializing in tactical support systems. These robots are manufactured for use by law enforcement[5][6], fire departments[7], military, and government institutions.[8] The NYFD has used one of these robots since 2014, with plans to officially retire the robot in 2022.[9][10] In October of 2022 the United Ukrainian American Relief Committee provided the State Emergency Service of Ukraine with one of SuperDroid Robots tactical robots to aid with clearing explosives in the Kharkiv Oblast region.[11]
In 2009 SuperDroid Robots expanded into a 4,000 square foot facility located in Raleigh, North Carolina. It relocated in 2011 to a 10,000 square foot facility in Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina.
SuperDroid Robots also produces inspection robots used across multiple industries.[12][13]
In 2013 SuperDroid Robots built a custom UGV robot for National Geographic photographers Michael Nichols and Nathan WIlliamson for the purpose of wildlife photography[14]. This robot was used to capture close up photographs of lion's in the Serengeti and was able to move within the pride without disturbing the animals routines.[15][16][17][18]
In 2015 the company started a Kickstarter campaign to fund the production of a remote controlled keg-carrying robot.[19][20]. The campaign did not reach it's target goal.
In Spring of 2022 Charlie and Susan Payne announced their retirement and sold the company to Rex Technology Solutions, an Illinois based technology company.
