Abbottabad is a city in Pakistan, situated 4120ft above sea level. It is most famous for serving as the hideout of Osama bin Laden and also as the place of his assassination.

Etymology[edit]

The city is named after its founder, Sir James Abbott, who settled there in 1853 after the annexation of the Punjab. He wrote a poem about his experiences living in the city.

Geography[edit]

The city is located 120 miles east of the Afghanistan border and 30 miles north of the Pakistani capital of Islamabad. It has a population of approximately one million people.

Osama bin Laden assassination[edit]

Osama bin Laden, a terrorist leader, had been hiding in a compound in Abbottabad until he was assassinated by a US Navy SEAL team on 2 May 2011. This generated lots of press attention in the area after his death.
