Canvas

Canvas as a painting surface is a heavy-duty fabric usually made of white cotton. The fabric is stretched across a wooden frame and protected from decay with a layer of gesso avoiding direct contact of oil or acrylic with the canvas fibers.

A painting executed on such fabric is called "a canvas".
