Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) is an initialism that stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender. The initialism, as well as some of its popular variations, has been in use since the 1990s and serves as a general word for issues related to sexuality and gender identity.
However, it does not have to be limited to individuals who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender; it may be used to anybody who is non-heterosexual or non-cisgender. In order to acknowledge this inclusiveness, a common variation, LGBTQ, includes the letter Q to represent people who identify as queer or who are questioning their sexual or gender identity, among other things.
