Tequila is an alcoholic beverage made from the blue agave plant. It is a cactus that takes between twelve and thirteen years to mature and it is dependent on bats for pollination. Tequila is the national drink of Mexico. In the 1970s, tequila became extremely popular. Tequila is typically enjoyed with lime and salt or in a mixed drink such as a Margarita.
The city of Tequila, in the Mexican State of Jalisco, is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
