Gerdau Graphene is a subsidiary of the Brazilian multinational steel and special metals corporation, Gerdau. The company was founded in 2021 as part of the Gerdau Next accelerator program and through a partnership with the Graphene Engineering and Innovation Centre (GEIC) at the University of Manchester.[1] It specializes in the development and commercialization of graphene-enhanced additives and materials for industrial applications.
Gerdau Graphene is credited with inventing the first graphene-enhanced polymeric resin masterbatch formulas for polyethylene and polypropylene, which resulted in new plastics that demonstrated improved mechanical, thermal, and barrier properties.[2][3][4][5] In 2023, Gerdau Graphene announced that it had successfully manufactured graphene-enhanced polyethylene plastic films and packaging, a first for the plastics industry.[6][7][8]
In 2022, Gerdau Graphene developed the first anti-abrasive graphene-enhanced architectural paint. Its parent company, Gerdau, applied the new paint to its factory floors in March 2022, making it the world's first large-scale use of a water-based graphene-enhanced architectural paint.[9][10][11]
