Athens, Georgia is the major body of Athens-Clarke county, a unified city-county located in the north of the state. The population of this consolidated municipality currently is just over 100,000 people, a majority of whom are residents involved with the University of Georgia, the first state-chartered university in the United States.

The city and surrounding region are well known for their musical and artistic output. Famous groups from the area include R.E.M. and The B-52s, both major musical acts of the 1980s.
