Saint Laurence School is a Catholic school located in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania teaching grades preschool through eighth grade. St. Laurence School is a member of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia[1]and accredited by the Middle States Association Commission on Elementary and Secondary Schools[2].

History[edit]

Saint Laurence parish was founded June 10, 1917 by the Reverend Maurice F. Cowl. The first Mass was celebrated on June 17, 1917. In September 1919, the school opened with one room in a small farmhouse, which also doubled as a convent for the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The first diploma was given out to the graduates of 1927. The first eighth grade commencement ceremony was held in 1951.

In the early 1960’s under the pastorship of Msgr. Cummiskey additional classrooms were added to hold the increasing enrollment of students. In the late 1970’s the new pastor Msgr. Fitzmaurice began a kindergarten and preschool program in the school.

Since this time, Saint Laurence School has undergone many renovations to keep up with technological advancements. In 2017, Saint Laurence celebrated 100 years of excellence in faith and education.

Academics/Curriculum[edit]

Saint Laurence School strives to respectfully recognize, celebrate, and educate its diverse school community. St. Laurence School is committed to academic excellence through a positive and challenging learning environment, integrating Catholic values of service and respect for all God’s people.

St. Laurence School incorporates Christ’s words and teachings into their STREAM(Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Art, Mathematics). Rather than separating each course from religion, St. Laurence integrates them. Along with these STREAM focused courses, St. Laurence’s Curriculum teaches Social Studies, English Language Arts, Music, Physical Education, Spanish, and Latin.

Extracurriculars[edit]

Saint Laurence School holds after school clubs and activities for their students which include CYO Sports[3], Choir, Drama Club, Altar Servers, Debate Club, Art Club, and Yearbook Club .
