The Ashanti Empire or kingdom was situated in modern-day Ghana on the western coast of Africa. First established in the late 1600s, the empire flourished in the mid-1700s corresponding with the rise of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade.[1][2]
As the slave trade started to become more unfavored among western society, the Ashanti sought to continue the trade knowing the empire relied on its continuance.[3]
