1. How could you have prepared better for the midterm exam, and which part of American history do you think you could improve most for next time?

I could have improved by spreading out my study time over a longer period instead of cramming just in the week before. The part of American history I could have improved on most was memorizing the presidents.

Excellent!

2. Which is your favorite question on the midterm exam that you missed, and what do you like about the question or subject matter?

  1. 8. Harriet Beach(er) Stowe is credited with which of the following.

I answered with a.) inventing the cotton gin. What possessed me to circle this answer is beyond me, so it made me laugh when I saw it corrected. Also, I liked the typo in the question.

Superb, and nice catch about the typo! That is a funny mistake for me.

3. Comment on any aspect of the Scopes Trial or the issues leading up to it, and/or can you compare it to any other influential trial in American history?

It was very interesting that Darrow asked the jury to find his client guilty. Roe vs. Wade is similar to this case, as it also dealt with the development of a person.

Fascinating analogy. I'll reflect on that.

4. Do you think the United States should have entered World War I, and why?

Yes. The US was directly affected by the matters at hand, because Germans were sinking ships that had Americans on them.

OK.

5. Your view of Teddy Roosevelt, please.

Roosevelt was a very good president considering his being thrust into office after President McKinley was assassinated. He had new ideas, and made good decisions.

OK, but a bit more detail is needed to support your view. (Minus 1).

6. Pick one of the Constitutional Amendments 16 through 19, and express your understanding and view of it.

The Nineteenth Amendment states that no one should be denied the right to vote based on their sex. Thus, women were allowed to vote.

Right.

7. Explain the cartoon.

The cartoon shows an enlarged Teddy Roosevelt with angel's wings holding the ears of Japan and Russia, depicting how he ended the Russo-Japanese War, thus earning a Nobel Prize. The cartoon was published in 1905.

Excellent!

Honors (pick 3 out of 5)

H2. What is your view of the limitations on free speech during World War I?

The point of limiting free speech was to keep people from being discouraged out of buying war bonds--the effect was good, but the means were off. No one should be denied free speech.

Superb. Will use as a model.

H3. Write on any debate topic or issue in the lecture.

Debate: Was it discriminatory not to include girls and women in this draft?

No. At that time, only men were looked at as being capable of being soldiers. Women were keepers of house and children. Times have changed, though, and if the draft were ever reinstated, it would probably include women as well.

Could be, but I doubt it. Times may have changed, but differences between men and women haven't. Our enemies don't use coed armies, and men and women interactions on the battlefield are not always helpful to the cause. The likelihood of women POWs is not welcome.

H4. Please provide your analysis of the midterm exam, in any way. Were the questions challenging? Did it cover the periods and subject matter appropriately? Did you learn from it overall?

The midterm was very challenging and educating. I learned from what I got wrong, and also how to eliminate answers I KNEW were wrong to narrow down the choices, so to have better odds of getting the answer right.

Superb.
Very well done! 99/100. Congratulations!--Aschlafly 12:44, 22 November 2008 (EST)
