Rocky Mountains

The Rocky Mountains, often known as the Rockies, is a mountain range that crosses the western part of the United States and Canada. The highest peaks are generally found in Colorado which boasts over 50 Fourteeners (peaks 14,000 feet above sea level or higher). The single highest peak is Mt. Elbert, in Colorado.

Many Native American and Native Canadian tribes have had their traditional homelands in the Rocky Mountains, including the Ute in Colorado, the Blackfoot, the Cheyenne, and the Ktunaxa. The Rockies of the US were mapped by Americans Louis and Clark in 1804, though other Europeans had discovered them earlier.

In 1893, American Katharine Lee Bates wrote a poem that became the song America the Beautiful upon seeing the sight of the Rocky Mountains.
