Government-Sponsored Enterprise

Government-sponsored enterprise (GSE) are privately owned corporations that are created by the U.S. Congress. There public purpose is to reduce the cost of capital for different sectors of the economy. Although they are supposed to implicit backing of the U.S. government, they are not directly obligated to do so. GSE's have drawn criticisms, with some labeling them as "corporate welfare". Examples include the Federal Home Loan Bank, Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (Freddie Mac), Federal Farm Credit Bank, Resolution Funding Corporation, and The Student Loan Marketing Association.
