An acronym for the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation, WARF is a private, non-profit organization founded in 1925 to promote scientific research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. WARF obtains patents for inventions developed through University research, licenses those patents, and returns the licensing fees to the University. The first patent obtained by WARF was for ultraviolet irradiation of foodstuffs to increase their Vitamin D content. Warfarin, an anticoagulant drug and rodenticide, takes it name from WARF.
