Homework Lecture Six

1. The main goal of the newly elected President Lincoln was to save the Union.

Correct!

2. The purposes of the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments to the Constitution were to abolish slavery, give all races equal rights, and give all races the right to vote.

Correct again!

3. My favorite military figure from the Civil War was General Grant. He knew how to use every advantage he could get, and he won the war.

Good.

4. I would have rebuilt the South, brought the states back into the Union, and get the South back into the Legislative Branch.

OK, but you might be more specific. I think nearly everyone would agree with your general approach. The real controversy is in some details.

5. Since Lincoln was homeschooled he probably had better control over himself then someone from a public school.

Very interesting. Will include as a model answer.

6. I think someone who was in support of McClellan made the cartoon. The cartoon shows Lincoln running away from the White House and McClellan walking in.

Good, but mention how Lincoln feared losing the 1864 election to McClellan. (Minus 1).

7. The Cartoon is showing Columbia protecting the Chinese immigrants from the anti-Chinese-immigrant crowd. Should the Chinese stay or go.

Good, but add that the cartoonist sides with the immigrants in this cartoon.

8. H1. I prefer inflation to deflation. In deflation is the rising of prices, but he economy is not crashing. When deflation happens, the economy crashes. Inflation is encouraged more by a “hard money” standard because the value of the dollar decreases.

No, deflation is falling prices, like a deflating tire. Inflation is rising prices, like an inflating tire. Hard money prevents inflation because the value of the dollar remains constant. (Minus 2).

9. Mystery: Did George McClellan scorn Abraham Lincoln because he was homeschooled? George McClellan probably would not scorn Abraham Lincoln because he was homeschooled. Homeschooling was pretty common back then. He probably scorned Lincoln because Lincoln did not have as great an education as he had. McClellan graduated West Point in the top five of his class. He probably thought he was a better man and knew more than Lincoln ever could.

Insightful answer, but wouldn't homeschooling be a factor in McClellan's view that Lincoln "did not have as great an education" as McClellan had? Perhaps McClellan felt that Lincoln had no education at all. Some more research might shed light on this.

10. H3. Abraham Lincoln was a great man. He was very intelligent. When he became president, he knew what had to be done in order to preserve the Union, and he took the right actions. Not every president would have declared war on its own country.

Superb.
