Carniola (in Slovenian, Kranjska) is a historical region of Slovenia. It is first mentioned in 973 as a part of the Franks-governed Greater Carantania. In the middle of the 13th century, it became part of the Habsburg empire and lasted in it for more than 600 years. In 1849, it was internally divided into Gorenjska (Upper region), Notranjska (Inner region) and Dolenjska (Lower region), which today exist as independent regions.
