Racial tensions on campus[edit]

On April 29, 2017, a black St. Olaf student, Samantha Wells, posted pictures on social media of the note she said she found on her windshield. Her post sparked campus protests and classes were canceled for two days while officials investigated the incident. Students held protests in response to the note. On May 10, St. Olaf President David R. Anderson sent a letter to students stating that the note was “fabricated” and that a student admitted to writing it as an apparent “strategy to draw attention to concerns about the campus climate.”[2] The incident happened at a time when "racially threatening" events occurred on other Northern college campuses, such as the University of Maryland.
