Shandong (Simplified: 山东; Traditional: 山東; Hanyu pinyin: Shándòng; Wade-Giles: Shantung) is a province of eastern China, taking the form of a large peninsula protruding into the East China Sea and Bohai Gulf. The provincial capital is Jinan; other major centres are Qingdao (Tsingtao, a German territory between 1898 and 1914 and subsequently Japanese-occupied), Yantai (known as Chefoo, a summer base for the US China squadron), and Weihai (formerly Weihaiwei, a British leased territory between 1898 and 1930).
