Hastings

Hastings is a fishing port and resort town on the English Channel, in Sussex, south-east England. William the Conqueror landed his army at Pevensey, near Hastings, in 1066, and the decisive battle which took place at the village of Senlac (now called Battle), in which he vanquished the English army and killed the English King, Harold II, is known to history as the Battle of Hastings. A Norman castle was built at Hastings; its ruins dominate the skyline of the town. In the nineteenth century a fashionable extension of the town to the west, known as St Leonards, was designed by the architect John Nash. Hastings was one of the original Cinque Ports (with Sandwich, Hythe, Romney, and Dover.)
