Derby

Derby is a city and is the county town of Derbyshire, England through which the River Derwent flows. Its population is 221,716 (2001).

ADtranz (formerly British Rail Engineering Limited) manufacture railway trains in the city and the railway station is a regional interchange. Toyota's car factory is in Burnaston, near Derby. Rolls Royce have facilities in the city. Derby, Nottingham and Leicester are served by East Midlands Airport. Derby County Football Club play in the English Premier League (soccer).

"Derby" is also used as a common word in sports, meaning an important or traditional game between two teams of the same town. Often the derby is considered more important by the supporters of the teams involved than success in the championship. Traditional derbys in European soccer are the Manchester derby between Manchester United and Manchester City and the Milan derby between Inter and AC Milan.
