The University of Kansas (also known as KU) is a university located in Lawrence, Kansas. As of spring 2007, about 25,000 students were enrolled at the Lawrence Campus.[2] The school's mascot is the Jayhawk, a fictitious bird, and the school colors are crimson and blue. The school's official seal is Moses in front of the burning bush.[3] Notable alumni include Bob Dole, Clyde Tombaugh, William Allen White, and Kathleen Sebelius.[4] The school is also known for its storied men's basketball program, which won the 1988 and 2008 National Championships and has produced many NBA players, including Wilt Chamberlain, Danny Manning, Paul Pierce, and Kirk Hinrich. Lately, the school's football team has had success as well, reaching #2 in the polls in November 2007. (The University's sports teams play in the Big 12 Conference.) It is known especially for its Political Science department and its Dole Institute of Politics, which frequently hosts political speakers from all over the political spectrum.

The University of Kansas is generally considered to have a very liberal environment. The University's Union was heavily damaged by an arsonist in 1970.[5] This was originally thought to have been part of an anti-Vietnam War protest, as large protests were going on at this time on campus, but an internal review conducted by the Union that was only recently made public concluded that the fire was actually the responsibility of a disgruntled Union employee who had been dismissed.

Two KU professors first discovered helium in natural gas in 1905 in Bailey Hall, a building which is still used for classes.[6]
