Meta

From Britannica 11th Edition (1911)

Meta, the Latin word for the goal which formed the turningpoint for the chariot_ races in the Roman circus. The metae consisted of three conical pillars resting on a single podium. None have been preserved, but they are shown on coins, gems and terra-cotta bas-reliefs.
