Stockport

Stockport is a town in Greater Manchester, England, approximately six miles south of Manchester city centre. Until 1974 it was in the county of Cheshire. The River Goyt and River Tame join in the town to form the River Mersey.

Stockport railway station is a local interchange on the main line from Manchester to London, which crosses the town on a monumental viaduct. The A6 road runs through the town and the M60 Manchester orbital motorway runs to the north of the town centre.

Historically hats and cotton and silk products were manufactured in the town. There is a hat museum.

Stockport County Football Club play in the English Football League Two (soccer).

Its population is 136,083 (2001).
