Salford City Reds

Salford City Reds^[1] are an English rugby league club based in the city of Salford, Greater Manchester. They were relegated from the Engage Super League^[2] at the end of 2007 and will play play in the National League One for the 2008 season.

History[edit]

The club was founded in 1873 as Salford Rugby Football Club by boys who attended Cavendish Street Chapel in the Manchester district of Hulme.

When twenty-two clubs split from the Rugby Football Union in 1895, Salford was not among them. However, at a meeting in April 1896, a vote to join the new Northern Rugby Football Union was passed with only three votes against. Salford played their first game under the new code in September 1896.

Salford's glory years were during the 1930s when the won three Championship titles, the Challenge Cup, the Lancashire Cup four times and the Lancashire League five times.

They were promoted to the Super League in for the 1997 season and were relegated at the end of 2002. However they returned in 2004 only to be relegated at the end of 2007.

Salford play in an all red strip and during a tour of France in 1934 were proclaimed ‘Les Diables Rouges’ by their hosts. They have since been known as the Red Devils.
