Tyler, Texas

Tyler is a city in east Texas, named for former President John Tyler who was instrumental in bringing the then Republic of Texas into the United States.

It is world-renowned for its production of roses, earning it the moniker "Rose Capital of the World". The city operates a 14-acre rose garden open to the public featuring various rose varieties.

There are two universities located in the city: The University of Texas at Tyler (a public institution) and Texas College (a private historically black university operated under the auspices of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church) and a community college (Tyler Junior College).

Although East Texas is predominantly Protestant, Tyler has many Roman Catholic facilities: the diocese for East Texas is located in Tyler, a Catholic school (Bishop T.K. Gorman) is located there, and one of the two major hospital systems in East Texas is the Catholic-founded CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances System (the product, over time, of several mergers involving mainly Catholic-backed entities).
