Carpenter won over challenger Frank Brunner. District 5 incumbent Julie B. Aranibar faced Mary S. Cantrell in the runoff election on November 4, 2014, since neither was able to garner 50 percent plus one of the vote. Cantrell unseated Aranibar in the runoff.
