Virginia Wesleyan University is an accredited private university sponsored by the United Methodist Church.

The school was founded in 1966 as Virginia Wesleyan College. It describes its mission as, "Rooted in the liberal arts tradition as well as its Methodist heritage, Virginia Wesleyan has been focused on providing a broad academic foundation while cultivating productive and engaged citizens. A meaningful liberal arts education includes the search for humane, social and scientific principles which, after thorough examination, provide the basis for understanding oneself, society, and the world. A cross-disciplinary approach allows students to build knowledge and explore their interests in the classroom and beyond."[2]

The school is in the process of changing its name to Virginia Wesleyan University in recognition of its graduate and online instructional programs.

The campus includes five sororities and two fraternities which house 15% of its students.[3]
